Cheery Lane opens the traditional dollhouse from every side, letting children rearrange a miniature neighbourhood and tell a different story each time they play.

What launched

Melissa & Doug launched Cheery Lane on August 31, 2026. The modular pretend-play collection uses wooden and mixed-material buildings, figures and accessories that can be combined into different neighbourhood layouts.

Unlike a traditional dollhouse with a fixed front and back, the sets are designed to be approached from multiple angles. They can also fold for storage and travel. The company says early pre-launch inventory sold out, suggesting strong interest in a toy that feels familiar but offers more freedom to rebuild the scene.

Why open-ended play matters

The interesting part is not simply the miniature design. It is the absence of one prescribed way to play. A shop can become a home, figures can change roles, and the “story” can move as children connect, separate and rearrange the buildings.

That kind of play can invite language, sequencing, perspective-taking and fine-motor practice. It can also make it easier for siblings or friends to build a shared story because the layout is accessible from more than one side.

How to get more from a play set

  • Start with fewer pieces and rotate extras later instead of presenting everything at once.
  • Ask open questions such as “Who lives here?” or “What happens next?”
  • Add ordinary household objects—a fabric scrap, cardboard tube or wooden spoon—to expand the world.
  • Let the child direct the story. Adult narration is most useful when it follows rather than controls the play.
  • Check every component against the stated age guidance, especially when younger siblings are nearby.

The SIMBABY take

Cheery Lane’s strongest idea is architectural: it removes the “correct” viewing angle and creates room for several stories at once. Parents do not need this particular set to encourage open-ended play, but it is a thoughtful example of how toy design can invite imagination without relying on a screen or a complicated set of rules.
